Types of Printing on Paper: Weights, Finishes, and How to Spec Stock

Paper decides more about a printed piece than most people expect. The same design, run on two different stocks, can read as premium or as disposable, and it can sail through postal automation or get flagged for a surcharge. The types of printing on paper you can choose from come down to three variables that stack together: weight, surface, and grade.
This guide explains all three the way a commercial print floor actually uses them. It also corrects the single most common misunderstanding about US paper weight, which trips up buyers on nearly every first job.

How Paper Weight Actually Works in the US
Paper weight is where most specs go wrong. Two stocks labeled "80 lb" can differ enormously in thickness and stiffness, and neither one weighs 80 pounds in any way a buyer would guess.
Basis Weight Is 500 Sheets of the Parent Size, Not the Cut Sheet
US paper is sold by basis weight: the weight, in pounds, of 500 sheets of that grade cut to its own basic size. The basic size is a large parent sheet, not the letter-size sheet that comes out of the box.
This is the detail that causes the confusion. A ream of 20 lb bond does not weigh 20 pounds. Bond and writing grades use a 17 x 22 inch basic size, and one 17 x 22 sheet cuts into exactly four 8.5 x 11 sheets. So 500 parent sheets equal 2,000 letter sheets, and a 500 sheet ream of 20 lb letter paper weighs roughly 5 pounds.
Each grade uses a different basic size, which is why the numbers are not comparable across grades:
- Bond and writing: 17 x 22 inches
- Text and book: 25 x 38 inches
- Cover: 20 x 26 inches
- Index: 25.5 x 30.5 inches
That is the whole reason 80 lb text feels like a magazine page while 80 lb cover feels like a postcard. Both are "80 lb," but they are weighed on completely different parent sheets.
GSM Is the One Number That Compares Across Grades
Grams per square meter measures exactly what it says: the weight of a one meter square of the sheet, regardless of grade or parent size. Because the reference area never changes, GSM is the only weight figure that lets you compare a text stock against a cover stock honestly.
If you are evaluating quotes from more than one source, ask for GSM. It removes the grade ambiguity entirely.

Read those cover rows carefully if you are speccing a mailed postcard. Basis weight on its own will not tell you whether a sheet clears the 14 pt practical floor covered later in this guide, because a coated 100 lb cover can caliper nearer 10 pt. Postcards get specced by caliper, not by pounds.
Points and Caliper Measure Thickness Instead of Weight
Card stock is often sold by caliper, expressed in points, where one point equals one thousandth of an inch. A 14 pt card is 0.014 inches thick; a 16 pt card is 0.016 inches.
Caliper matters when stiffness is the requirement rather than mass. Two sheets at the same GSM can differ in caliper depending on how the stock was made, and a bulkier sheet feels more substantial at the same weight. For anything that has to survive handling, such as a postcard or a business card, caliper is the more useful spec.
The Main Types of Printing Paper
Grade is the second variable, and the one buyers name least often. The papers a commercial shop stocks in North America fall into a handful of grades, each engineered for a different job, and picking the wrong one is what makes a piece feel off even when the design and color are right.
Bond and Writing
Bond is the workhorse for text documents. It runs cleanly through high-volume equipment, takes toner well, and accepts a pen without feathering. Statements, invoices, letters, and forms live here, almost always at 20 lb or 24 lb.
Bond is not built for photography. It has no coating, so ink and toner sit into the fiber and images look softer than they would on a coated sheet.
Text and Book
Text stock is the middle of the range: heavier and more opaque than bond, still flexible enough to fold and bind. Brochures, newsletters, catalog interiors, and booklet pages are text-weight work, usually 70 lb to 100 lb.
Most photographic content lands on text stock, so this is the grade where the coated or uncoated decision does the most visible work.
Offset and Opaque
Offset stock, often sold as opaque, is the high-volume commercial workhorse: a text-weight sheet engineered for dimensional stability and high opacity on long runs. It is the default for book interiors, manuals, and any two-sided job where show-through would be a problem. Weights commonly run 50 lb to 70 lb. Cover and Cardstock
Cover stock is the rigid end. Postcards, business cards, folders, presentation covers, and tent cards all run on cover, typically 65 lb through 120 lb.
Cover is also sold by caliper, and the two scales are not interchangeable. Coating is the biggest reason why: a coated sheet is compressed at the calender stack during finishing, so coated 100 lb cover typically calipers around 10 pt while an uncoated 100 lb cover of the same basis weight can run 12 pt to 14 pt. Mill-to-mill bulk differences move it further. Treat any lb-to-point conversion as an estimate, and when thickness is what actually matters, such as on anything that has to clear a postal limit, specify the caliper in thousandths and ask the printer to confirm it on the actual sheet.
Bristol and vellum bristol sit alongside cover as stiff, uncoated alternatives, common for tags, tickets, and index-style work where a printable, writable surface beats a coated one.
Index, Tag, and Specialty Stocks
Index is a stiff, lightly finished sheet built for filing and repeated handling, common for record cards and dividers. Tag is tough and tear-resistant for hang tags and industrial uses.
Specialty stocks cover the rest: linen and felt finishes with a visible texture for invitations and certificates, translucent sheets for overlays, synthetic and latex-saturated stocks for anything that has to survive moisture, and label stock with a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer.

Coated vs Uncoated Paper
Surface changes color reproduction more than any other single choice, and it is the one spec a client can judge instantly by eye.
How Coating Changes the Print
Coated paper carries a mineral layer, usually clay or calcium carbonate, applied over the base sheet. That layer keeps ink and toner sitting on the surface instead of soaking into the fiber. The result is denser blacks, higher color saturation, and sharper detail.
Uncoated paper has no such layer. Ink penetrates the fiber, so color reads softer and slightly muted, and fine detail spreads a little. That is a drawback for photography and an advantage for anything meant to feel natural or tactile.
Gloss, Silk, and Matte
Coated stocks split into three surfaces:
- Gloss is highly reflective. It produces the most saturated color and the sharpest images, which makes it the default for photo-driven marketing pieces. The tradeoff is glare, which makes long passages of body text tiring to read.
- Silk, sometimes sold as satin, sits in the middle: a smooth coated surface with a low sheen. It holds most of the color advantage of gloss without the glare, which makes it the safest choice for a piece carrying both images and substantial text.
- Matte coated is smooth but non-reflective. Color is slightly less punchy than gloss, but readability is excellent and the surface reads as more understated.
When Uncoated Wins
Uncoated is the right call more often than its reputation suggests. Pick it when the reader has to write on the piece, such as a reply card, form, or response device. Pick it when the brand is built on a natural or handmade impression. Pick it for text-dominant pieces where glare would fight the reader.
Uncoated is also the only sensible choice for anything that will be signed, stamped, or filled in by hand, because ink from a pen beads on a coated surface.
Specialty Coatings and Finishes
Coatings applied after printing are a separate layer of choice. Aqueous coating is a water-based clear seal that protects against scuffing during handling and mailing, and it is inexpensive enough to be a default on postcards. UV coating cures under ultraviolet light into a harder, glossier shell for a strong premium impression. Soft-touch produces a velvety surface that changes how the piece feels in the hand more than how it looks.

Matching Paper to the Printed Piece

Postcards and Direct Mail
Postcards need rigidity, because a floppy card jams postal automation and arrives creased. Start at 14 pt for a standard mailer, specified by caliper rather than by basis weight, and add an aqueous coating on the address side to survive the sorting equipment. If the quote comes back in pounds, ask what the sheet actually calipers: a coated 100 lb cover can measure nearer 10 pt, which is thinner than most buyers picture.
Heavier is not automatically better here, and this is where the caliper number earns its keep. Pieces claiming First-Class card prices are capped at 0.016 inches thick. A nominal 16 pt board sits right at that ceiling, which leaves no headroom for mill tolerance, so a 16 pt card going out at card prices should be measured rather than assumed. Press-applied aqueous adds only a fraction of a point, but a sheet already running at the top of its tolerance band can cross the line on its own. If you want the premium feel at card prices, either hold at 14 pt with a soft-touch finish or confirm the actual caliper of the coated sheet before committing the run. Brochures, Flyers, and Booklets
Single-sheet flyers run well on 80 lb to 100 lb text. Folded brochures and flyers generally want 80 lb text or heavier so the panels hold their shape, with silk or matte coating if the piece carries much reading.
Booklets pair a text-weight interior with a cover-weight outer, commonly 80 lb text inside and 80 lb or 100 lb cover outside. Anything above roughly 100 lb text should be scored before folding, or the coating will crack along the fold.
Business Cards and Presentation Materials
Business cards are a stiffness decision. 14 pt is the common floor and 16 pt reads as noticeably more substantial. Soft-touch or matte finishes have largely displaced high gloss for cards, because the card is judged by feel as much as by appearance.
Letters, Statements, and Forms
Transactional mail runs on 20 lb or 24 lb bond, uncoated. The requirements are different from marketing work: the sheet has to fold cleanly, feed reliably through inserting equipment, and accept a pen. Coated stock fails all three tests.

Paper Specs That Affect Mail Deliverability
This is where paper choice stops being an aesthetic decision. If a printed piece is going into the mail, the stock has to satisfy USPS physical standards or the postage changes.
Cards and letters must be at least 0.007 inches thick to travel at all, and letter-size mail is capped at 0.25 inches thick. There is a second, stricter floor most buyers miss: within letter and card sizes, a piece taller than 4.25 inches or longer than 6 inches must be at least 0.009 inches thick. Missing that floor does not get the piece rejected. It is reclassified as a nonmachinable letter and pays nonmachinable prices on every copy in the run (USPS DMM 201.1.1a, 201.1.2.1a, 201.2.1).
Size Decides Which Rulebook Applies
This is the part buyers most often get backwards. Letter-size tops out at 6-1/8 inches high, so the 6.25 x 9 and 6.25 x 11 formats we run most often are not letters at all. At 6.25 inches high they clear that ceiling and mail as flats (DMM 201.4.1a).
Flats carry the lower 0.007 inch minimum, and for USPS Marketing Mail saturation pieces with simplified addresses, which is how EDDM travels, 0.007 inch is the governing floor (DMM 201.5.2.2). The 0.009 inch minimum reaches flats only when they are entered as automation flats (DMM 201.6.2.1), which saturation mail is not. The practical consequence: a light cover stock that would be nonmachinable on a 6 x 9 card is perfectly mailable on a 6.25 x 9 EDDM piece.
Card prices work the opposite way, with a ceiling rather than a floor, and the ceiling depends on how the mail is entered. Mailed retail, one stamp at a time, a card claimed at card prices can be no more than 4.25 inches high by 6 inches long by 0.016 inches thick, and that limit covers privately printed postcards, not only USPS stamped cards (USPS DMM 101.6.2). Entered commercially as presorted or automation First-Class Mail, the same card price reaches all the way to 6 inches high by 9 inches long, still capped at 0.016 inches thick (DMM 201.1.2.1c).
That gap is the most under-used fact in postcard specification, and it favors anyone mailing in volume. A 6 x 9 card carries more than twice the message area of a 4.25 x 6 and still pays card prices, provided it is entered presorted and the finished caliper stays at or under 0.016 inches. Mail the identical card retail and it pays letter prices instead.
One caveat keeps the 0.016 ceiling from being a universal rule: it binds only on pieces claiming First-Class card prices. A postcard mailed as USPS Marketing Mail is priced as a letter, where the thickness limit is 0.25 inches, so heavier board costs nothing in postage on a Marketing Mail drop. Decide the class first, then the stock.
Aspect ratio matters too. Automation-compatible letters must fall within a defined length-to-height ratio, and a piece outside that window pays a higher rate no matter how well it is printed. The practical consequence is that stock, size, and postage are one decision, not three. Upgrading a mailer from 100 lb cover to a heavier board can quietly push it past a thickness threshold and raise the postage on every piece in the run. Recycled and Sustainable Stock
Recycled stock has changed considerably, and the old objection that it prints poorly no longer holds for most commercial work.
Recycled paper is graded by post-consumer waste content, the share of the sheet made from material that reached an end user and was recovered. A sheet marked 30% PCW is the common commercial middle ground and is widely available in both coated and uncoated finishes. Higher PCW percentages run up to 100%, with availability narrowing and cost rising as the percentage climbs.
Two practical differences are worth planning around. Recycled sheets often run slightly lower in brightness than their virgin equivalents, so a design built on a bright white may read warmer than expected. Recycled stock can also show marginally more variation between production lots, which matters on a long run or a reprint that has to match an earlier drop.
Certification is the other signal buyers ask about. Chain-of-custody programs, principally FSC, SFI, and PEFC, verify that fiber came from responsibly managed forests, and the resulting mark can be printed on the piece. If an FSC or SFI logo needs to appear on the finished job, say so at quote time, because it constrains both which specific sheets can be used and which mills they come from.

For most marketing work the honest answer is that a 30% PCW sheet in the right weight and finish will be indistinguishable to the reader from a virgin sheet. Where sustainability is part of the brand message, the more visible choice is usually an uncoated recycled stock, because the texture communicates the intent in a way a coated sheet does not.
Brightness, Opacity, and Color Accuracy
Weight and coating get most of the attention, but three secondary specs decide whether a sheet looks cheap once it is printed.
Brightness measures how much light the sheet reflects. Commodity grades sit in the low to mid 80s, most commercial sheets land in the low to mid 90s, and premium sheets loaded with optical brightening agents can measure above 100. Higher brightness produces more contrast and makes colors appear cleaner. A bright white sheet is the standard choice for marketing work; a warmer, lower-brightness sheet reads as more traditional and is often preferred for books and stationery.
Opacity measures how much light passes through. Low opacity causes show-through, where the reverse side is visible behind the text. This is the spec that matters most on any two-sided piece, and it is why a light text stock can look poor on a double-sided flyer even when the printing is perfect. Heavier stock generally means higher opacity, though fillers and finish affect it independently.
Color accuracy depends on the interaction of surface, brightness, and the press. A coated sheet holds a wider color gamut than an uncoated one, so a brand color that reproduces exactly on gloss may shift noticeably on uncoated. When color fidelity is critical, the right move is a press proof on the actual stock rather than a screen approval.
How to Spec Paper for a Commercial Run
Specifying stock for a production run is a different exercise from picking paper for a one-off. Four questions settle nearly every job:
- What has to survive? Handling, mailing, and shelf life set the minimum weight and decide whether a protective coating is needed.
- Does it fold? Anything folding above roughly 100 lb text needs scoring, which belongs in the spec rather than being discovered on press.
- Does anyone write on it? If yes, at least that panel has to be uncoated.
- Does it mail? If yes, thickness, flexibility, and aspect ratio are constraints, not preferences.
Answer those four and the field of candidate stocks narrows to two or three, which is a decision a printer can make with you in a single conversation rather than a catalog review.
One more step is worth the day it costs on any run of consequence: ask for a paper dummy, an unprinted mock-up folded and trimmed to the finished size in the actual stock. A dummy settles arguments about stiffness, bulk, and mailed thickness that no swatch book or on-screen proof can. Ask for a drawdown or a press proof on the same sheet when color fidelity is critical.
